Anything Butt Competition
We are pleased to announce we'll be having an Anything Butt (Dessert & Non-Dessert) competition as part of the Blue Ridge BBQ & Music Festival. The "Anything But" competition will take place on Saturday evening, September 1 with turn in at 7:00 p.m. Show off your creativity and BBQ Prowess at this fun event! This competition is an optional contest in addition to the KCBS Sanctioned cook-off taking place Sunday, September 2. All entrants for "Anything But" must also be competing in the KCBS Sanctioned categories. The fee to compete is $15. A team of 6 Local celebrity/sponsors will be on hand to judge the competition. Prize money will be based on the number of competing teams entering.
COMPETITION RULES
Anything But (Non-Dessert) Rules
Anything But (Non-Dessert) is defined by the Blue Ridge BBQ & Music Festival as any meat other than the four KCBS categories (chicken, pork ribs, pork, beef brisket) to be held on Sunday.
• "Anything But" Chicken. Other poultry such as duck, cornish hen or turkey is acceptable.
• “Anything But” Spare Ribs, Loin Back Ribs. Country style ribs are acceptable.
• “Anything But” Pork Shoulder, Boston Butts. Any other part of the pig is acceptable.
•“Anything But” Beef Brisket. Any other part of the cow is acceptable.
Seafood, turkey, veal, or any meats that are purchased at a grocery store are allowed in the contest.
Generally anything goes. This is meant to be a fun and creative category. Tantalize our taste buds!
• Recipe may be marinated or injected, and this may be done before arrival.
• Recipe may be baked, broiled, barbecued, grilled, fried, etc.
• Recipe may include garnish. Make it as pleasing to the eye as you wish.
• Recipe may be served as a casserole, stew, salad, hors d’oeuvre, etc.
• All cooking and preparation will be done on premises with the exception of marinating.
• All cooking to be done on cookers and/or grills normally associated with the barbecue cookoff.
• Gas grills are allowed for Anything But. Microwaves and ovens not allowed.
• The entry must be the work of an individual team. One entry per team.
Judging will use the "Blind Judging" method. The entry will be submitted in a numbered container provided by the contest organizer. A 9x9 standard box will be offered.
Anything But (Dessert) Rules
Anything But (Dessert) is a dessert contest.
• Desserts must be prepared on site in your team space & not be store bought.
• Use any heat source to prepare dessert.
• The entry must be the work of an individual team. One entry per team.
Anything But (Dessert & Non-Dessert) Judging
Judging will be based on the following:
1. Appeal & Innovation – can’t wait to taste it.
2. Taste – pleasing overall flavor or contrast of flavors. Any sauce not too hot, sweet or
commanding. The taste score will be doubled.
3. Tenderness & Texture – neither undercooked nor overcooked; just right, not to dry or wet.
All entries will be presumed average, a score of 5, and will be judged above or below from 1
to 9. In the event of a tie, the prize money will be divided equally.
